Self-placed or Pre-placed

When applying for an internship, traineeship or summer work and travel program you are able to choose how you find your placement in the USA. You can choose between two options: self-placed or pre-placed. Both options will enable you to complete a program in the USA and receive the necessary sponsorship that you need to receive your visa, but the manner in which the placement is found differs.

Self-placed

Many applicants are able to source their own placement on an internship, traineeship or seasonal work. US companies are open to receiving direct applications from overseas applicants and regularly recruit through this method. By finding your own placement you are able to choose the location of your placement and also the companies that you want to work with. You can tailor the placement to meet your needs. The minimum length for a self-placed intern or trainee placement is four months and a maximum length of twelve months (intern) and eighteen months (trainee). The minimum length for a self-placed work and travel placement is three months and the maximum period is four months.

Once you have your placement you need a sponsor to support your visa application which is where MyEducation (UK) gets involved. We will work with you and the host company to complete the necessary documents for your visa to be approved by the US Consulate and allow you to depart on time.

Pre-placed

If you encounter difficulties sourcing your own placement or if you prefer to let us do the groundwork, you can use our pre-placed service. We will find you a host company in a seasonal role or in the business or hospitality field. Applicants for the intern and trainee program must commit to a minimum placement length of twelve months and a maximum length of eighteen months. We will work with the company to complete the necessary documents for your visa to be approved. Please note that pre-placed placements might have a lower wage than a self-placed program and you are not able to dictate the area where you will be placed.

Please note that recent policy changes mean that an applicant must be able to show an income of at least $1,300 per month of their placement in order to meet visa eligibility criteria.
